Lake Toba is not just a lake — it is the caldera of a supervolcano that erupted 74,000 years ago in the largest volcanic event in the last 2 million years. Today, this extraordinary natural wonder is one of Southeast Asia’s most serene and culturally rich destinations.
This JavaRoutes tour takes you to Samosir Island, a landmass the size of Singapore that sits in the middle of the lake. Here, the Batak Toba people have preserved their unique culture for centuries — from the distinctive peaked-roof traditional houses to the haunting gondang music and the elaborate stone tombs of ancient kings.
Swim in the crystal-clear volcanic waters, cycle through traditional villages, visit the 200-year-old stone chairs where Batak kings once held court, and learn about the fascinating history of this isolated civilization. This is Sumatra at its most authentic and least touristy.
