Sumatra

Wild jungles, ancient orangutans, and Lake Toba — Indonesia's untamed frontier

Sumatra is Indonesia's wild frontier — a vast island of impenetrable rainforests, smoking volcanoes, and some of the world's rarest wildlife. Trek through the Gunung Leuser National Park to encounter wild orangutans swinging through the canopy, visit the spectacular Lake Toba (the world's largest volcanic lake), and explore the unique Minangkabau culture with its distinctive horn-shaped rooftops. Sumatra offers raw, authentic adventure for travelers seeking something beyond the beaten path.

What Makes Sumatra Special

🐒

Wild Orangutans

Trek into Gunung Leuser National Park for unforgettable encounters with wild Sumatran orangutans — one of our closest relatives, found nowhere else on Earth.

🌊

Lake Toba

The world's largest volcanic lake, formed by a supervolcanic eruption 74,000 years ago. Samosir Island in its center preserves the ancient Batak culture.

🌿

Bukit Lawang Jungle

Base camp for jungle treks into one of the world's oldest rainforests. Multi-day treks include river tubing, camping under the canopy, and wildlife spotting.

Best Time to Visit

Visit Sumatra during the dry season from May to September. June-August offers the best conditions for jungle trekking and orangutan spotting. Lake Toba is pleasant year-round but driest from June to September.

Dry Season: Apr–Oct
Wet Season: Nov–Mar

Getting There

Fly to Medan's Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) for North Sumatra (Lake Toba, Bukit Lawang). Padang's Minangkabau Airport serves West Sumatra. From Medan, Bukit Lawang is a 3-hour drive, and Lake Toba is 5 hours by road.

Travel Tips

1

Bring insect repellent and long sleeves for jungle treks

2

Hire a licensed guide for orangutan trekking — it's required

3

Be prepared for basic accommodation in jungle camps

4

Carry enough cash — ATMs are scarce in remote areas

5

Respect wildlife — maintain distance from orangutans
